High alert as escaping bandits allegedly purchase houses settle in Kano Report

A report obtained by AFP reveals that criminal gangs fleeing intensified law enforcement operations have begun relocating to Kano State in northwest Nigeria.

This situation is raising concerns that Kano could become a safe haven for bandits and exacerbate the ongoing security crisis in Northern Nigeria, where kidnappings and killings by bandits and terrorists remain rampant.

According to an intelligence report sent from the Zamfara State governor’s office to Kano authorities, the influx of bandits escaping military operations in Zamfara is becoming a growing concern.

The report indicates that these criminals, alongside their informants, have started acquiring houses in Kano, intending to use the properties as escape routes and safe spaces for their families and bandit leaders.

The report did not specify the number of bandits involved but highlighted six neighbourhoods where they have settled. It also called for the profiling of house buyers, particularly from Zamfara and Sokoto, to help identify those linked to bandit activities.

“It is true we received this intel from Zamfara. We already know of bandits and terrorists’ infiltration in parts of Kano, and we have been working to deal with the threat,” a security source in Kano confirmed to AFP. “We have been working quietly to avoid creating panic in the city,” the source added.

This development comes in the wake of an ongoing military crackdown on armed bandits and their accomplices in states like Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara.

The military offensive recently led to the death of key bandit kingpins, including Halilu Sububu, a notorious figure in the region.

Authorities in Kano remain on high alert, with a second security source pointing out that the city has been vigilant since 2009, following the influx of Boko Haram militants from Maiduguri. “This intel from Zamfara is only a reminder for us not to be complacent,” the source stated.

Despite repeated government efforts, insecurity in Nigeria continues to rise, marked by frequent kidnappings and killings, leaving citizens deeply concerned about their safety.
