Police authorities in Anambra State have launched an investigation after the body of a man was found hanging from a tree in a forested area of Amichi, located in the Nnewi South Local Government Area.

According to a statement issued on Friday, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the police were alerted to the scene after someone used the deceased’s mobile phone to report the incident.

Ikenga said the body has since been taken to a morgue, and efforts are being made to identify and contact the man’s family.

He noted that the police are working to determine the facts behind the disturbing discovery and are committed to uncovering those responsible, if foul play is established.

“The commissioner had charged officers and men of the command to uncover the circumstances surrounding a disturbing incident on 16th May 2025 of a dead body, found hanging on a tree in a bush at Amichi, Nnewi South Local Government Area,” the statement read.

“Information revealed that an unidentified person called through the deceased’s phone to report the discovery of the body hanging on a mango tree in a bush.

“Meanwhile, the body has been identified and deposited in the morgue, and efforts are ongoing to contact the deceased’s family for necessary action.”

Ikenga also disclosed that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has directed officers to increase intelligence gathering and improve surveillance across the region to combat criminal activity.
