Identity of Nigerian Army s Captain recently killed by Boko Haram revealed

The identity of Nigerian Army officer, who was killed a few days ago in a deadly attack by Boko Haram insurgents in Izge, a community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, has been revealed.

The fallen officer has been identified as Captain Kamal, who died during the early Wednesday morning assault when insurgents stormed the farming village, shooting sporadically.

The Emir of Gwoza, Mohammed Shehu Timta, recounted the incident, stating that the attack occurred around 1 a.m. He noted that the terrorists were eventually repelled by Nigerian troops with support from local hunters, vigilantes, and members of the civilian Joint Task Force.

In addition to Captain Kamal, one other soldier was also killed in the confrontation. According to the emir, security forces managed to kill three of the attackers and recovered several motorcycles, bicycles, an operational vehicle, and a sophisticated rifle.

The incident adds to a grim security outlook in Nigeria. According to a recent report by SBM Intelligence, at least 2,000 people were killed nationwide in the first quarter of 2025, including 136 security personnel. Borno State topped the casualty list with 515 reported deaths, followed by Zamfara, Katsina, and other states.

The report detailed that 892 civilians, 462 bandits, 234 Boko Haram members, 119 vigilantes, 42 kidnappers, and 66 cultists were among those killed between January and March.

Reacting to the worsening insecurity, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum emphasized the need for a balanced strategy. While commending military efforts, he called for the adoption of non-kinetic measures to complement combat operations.

“Borno State has, within the last three years, received more than 300,000 repentant Boko Haram fighters, and not all of them are fighters. Some of them are farmers,” Zulum said.

Nigeria has battled a violent insurgency for over a decade, with Boko Haram and other extremist groups continuing to destabilize the North East. Despite military operations and government assurances, the crisis remains one of the world’s most severe, displacing millions and decimating communities.
