Falling container crushes 2 dispatch riders to death in Lagos

A tragic accident on Eko Bridge heading toward Alaka claimed the lives of two dispatch riders on Sunday when a 20-foot container fell on them following a collision involving two loaded Mack trucks.

According to a statement issued by Adebayo Taofiq, spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the crash was caused by excessive speeding.

Taofiq explained that the dispatch riders, whose vehicles bore registration numbers T-10357 LA and KJA 107 XM, were travelling along the bridge when the incident occurred.

“Preliminary findings suggest that the driver of one of the articulated trucks, reportedly driving at an excessive speed while allegedly dozing off, lost control of the vehicle.

“The truck then careened into another moving trucks ahead of it, triggering a violent impact.

“This collision led to the dislodgement of a 20-foot container from one of the trucks, which subsequently crushed two unsuspecting dispatch riders who were navigating the route at the time.

“Both victims were confirmed dead at the scene,” he said.

LASTMA officers stationed beneath the bridge responded swiftly to the emergency and rescued a truck driver who sustained serious injuries.

The injured driver was transported to a nearby hospital by a Lagos State Government ambulance for urgent treatment.

Taofiq added that both truck drivers involved fled the scene before authorities could arrive. He confirmed that efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the fleeing individuals.

To secure the area and maintain order, traffic officials cordoned off the crash site and rerouted vehicles through Coastain Roundabout.

In a condolence message, LASTMA General Manager, Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sympathy for the bereaved families.

He also issued a strong reminder to drivers, especially those operating articulated vehicles, to adhere to safety standards, remain vigilant behind the wheel, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before setting out.
