Less than two days after the North-East Governors’ Forum concluded its 11th meeting in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, suspected Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists have attacked a military base in the state.

The assault targeted the 27 Task Force Brigade  located in Gujba Local Government Area, residents confirmed.

“It was in the early hours of today, around 1.00am we heard a heavy gun battle at the 27 Task Force Brigade which is unusual to the test firing by the military. We later confirmed it was suspected insurgents,” one of the residents said.

The Nigerian Army also confirmed the attack in a post on its verified Facebook page on Saturday.

“Troops of Operation HADIN KAI currently in a fierce battle against ISWAP attack at Buni Gari, Yobe State. Details later,” it said.

A military source, speaking anonymously, also verified the attack but noted that information was still limited as of the time of filing this report.

In recent weeks, insurgents have launched strikes against military installations, destroyed a culvert along Goniri Road, and abducted travellers on the Damaturu-Bunigari-Biu route, leaving communities in fear.
