Nigerian Uber driver killed in U.S. during passenger pickup

A 77-year-old Nigerian immigrant working as an Uber driver was shot and killed in an ambush outside a Philadelphia hookah bar while attempting to pick up a customer in the early hours of Wednesday, April 15.
The deceased, Olatunji W. Bolaji of Norristown, Pennsylvania, had just arrived at the Byblos Hookah Bar shortly before 2 a.m. to collect a passenger when the attack occurred, CBS News reported.
According to Philadelphia Chief Inspector Scott Small, as a 22-year-old man entered Bolaji’s vehicle, two individuals exited another car parked nearby and opened fire.
The attackers discharged their weapons “at least four times,” fatally striking Bolaji in the head. The passenger was also hit in the arm, leg, and abdomen.

Despite his grave injuries, Bolaji attempted to flee the scene by driving off but lost control and crashed a short distance away. Emergency responders administered first aid, but he was later pronounced dead. He leaves behind a son and was described as a “loving partner and father.”
The wounded passenger, whose identity has not been disclosed, remains in critical condition at a local hospital, according to NBC10 Philadelphia.
Chief Inspector Small revealed that the shooting may have been preceded by a confrontation.
“It appears that right before the shots were fired, there was some sort of physical altercation. It also appears that someone in that vehicle was targeted,” he said.
Authorities believe the suspects escaped in a Jeep Grand Cherokee bearing Massachusetts license plates.
As investigations continue, the Philadelphia Police Department is offering a $20,000 reward for any information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible.
A family friend told NBC10 Philadelphia they were “heartbroken” and seeking “justice for the man who was senselessly murdered.”
Uber also issued a statement, sharing their condolences and expressing support.
“Our hearts break for the driver’s family and loved ones in the wake of this devastating loss,” the statement read. “We’ve reached out to police to offer our support as they work to bring those responsible for this heinous act of violence to justice.”
