2 feared killed 1 abducted as bandits attack Kano market

A violent attack on Faruruwa village market in Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State on Thursday evening has left two people feared dead and another abducted.

According to local accounts, the assault occurred just as traders were closing up for the day.

Eyewitnesses say the gunmen appeared to be targeting a well-known trader whose wife had previously been kidnapped and later freed after ransom was paid.

“They came straight to the businessman’s stall,” a resident who witnessed the incident said. “They didn’t find him there, so they abducted his son instead. Then they started shooting at random. Two people were killed, and one other person was injured.”

The same source, who requested anonymity over safety concerns, noted that the businessman’s wife had earlier spent around 60 days in captivity before her release.

“It is clear the businessman is their target,” he said. “His wife was taken before and now they have taken his son. This is becoming too much for our community.”

Faruruwa shares a border with parts of Katsina State, and many villagers believe the assailants may have crossed over from there.

“Everyone believes the bandits came from across the border,” the source added. “Soldiers are stationed in the area, but the terrain makes it hard to completely stop these attacks.”

Security personnel reportedly responded quickly to the emergency.
“The army came quickly and chased after the bandits,” the resident confirmed.

The Kano State Police Command has acknowledged the incident, with its spokesperson, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, stating that investigations are underway.

“Yes, we have received a report of an attack at Faruruwa market. Our men are on ground, and we are investigating. More details will be communicated as we receive them,” he said via telephone.
