2 suspected foreign military camps located in Nigeria dismantled Niger Republic

Authorities in Niger Republic say recent diplomatic outreach from Nigeria is yielding results, with alleged foreign-backed military activities along their shared border now being curtailed.

A visit by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs to Niamey has been described by Nigerien officials as a major breakthrough in restoring ties after a period of strained relations. The high-level engagement reportedly led to the closure of suspected foreign military outposts previously blamed for stoking instability in the region.

State broadcaster RTN reported that two alleged foreign-operated camps situated at Guigani and Garin-Kata—both in Nigerian territory close to the Nigerien border—have been dismantled. These sites were purportedly used to destabilise Niger, according to the report.

RTN also claimed that construction on a contentious logistics route stretching from Kandi in Benin Republic through Sokoto in Nigeria has been halted. The project was allegedly part of a larger network aimed at supporting anti-Niger operations.

A particularly pointed allegation by RTN involved a forest area near Gaba, along the Sokoto–Niger border. The site was allegedly a hub for armed groups covertly supported by foreign governments—including France, Nigeria, and Benin—under an operation it referred to as “Chibok 2.0.” According to the broadcaster, “That base… has now been ‘cleared.’”

Other allegations include the closure of a suspected training facility in the Lake Chad region and the withdrawal of foreign military trainers who were said to have been operating under assumed identities.

Though these assertions remain unconfirmed by independent sources, Nigerien officials praised the Nigerian delegation’s efforts as “a wise and courageous step” toward bolstering peace and fostering closer regional ties.

RTN urged the public to be cautious of misinformation and emphasized the need for continued prayers as the country works toward easing tensions with Benin Republic and reopening longstanding closed border crossings.

Regional experts note that while this marks a shift in tone between Niamey and Abuja, underlying issues—particularly accusations of foreign meddling—continue to shape security dynamics in the border regions.
