Solomon Dalung reveals real cause of Plateau killings

Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, has condemned the recent wave of killings in Bokkos Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State, describing the attacks as acts of terrorism rather than the result of a long-standing farmer-herder conflict.

Dalung’s statement follows a series of brutal attacks in the region. The Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC) reported that suspected bandits killed over 10 people on Wednesday night. By Saturday, the death toll had reportedly climbed to 52.

The latest violence comes just a week after gunmen attacked mourners in Ruwi community within the same LGA, further deepening the sense of insecurity among residents.

Dalung emphasized that framing the killings as part of a farmer-herder clash oversimplifies the issue and distracts from the growing threat of terrorism in the region.

Speaking on Monday when he appeared on the ‘Morning Show’, a programme on Arise TV, Dalung said there is more to the latest killings than meets the eye.

“One major issue on the Plateau is mislabelling criminals based on ethnic identities or community relations,” he said.

“The violence here isn’t a farmer-herder conflict; it’s terrorism. These groups have an enclave similar to those in the north-east, where they steal cattle, seize land and establish a parallel government in the bush.”

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar had blamed the killings on the alleged failure of President Bola Tinubu’s security architecture.

“The failure of Bola Tinubu’s security architecture has now become an endemic nationwide phenomenon with repeated killings, more of which do not even make the headlines,” Abubakar said.

Abubakar advised Tinubu to “reconfigure” the nation’s security architecture in a bid to protect the lives and property of Nigerians.
