FRSC officer killed as 17 travellers die in Ogun road accident

A fatal road crash on the Ikorodu–Sagamu Road in Ogun State claimed the lives of 18 individuals, including a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officer, on Saturday, April 5, 2025. The incident occurred at Gbaga and involved seven vehicles.

Florence Okpe, the spokesperson for the FRSC in Ogun, confirmed the tragic accident in a statement from Abeokuta. According to Okpe, the crash took place around 4:00 p.m. and involved a range of vehicles: a Toyota Hiace bus (AGL 752 YC), a Daf truck (T14007L), a Honda car (HT680), along with an unregistered Daf truck, a pickup (STF10204), and two motorcycles (AGG 448 Q, PKA 214 WS).

Okpe stated that the collision was caused by an attempt at wrongful overtaking by the driver of the Toyota Hiace, which led to a direct crash with the Daf truck. In the chaos that followed, an unregistered Daf truck experienced brake failure and crashed into an FRSC officer, resulting in the officer’s immediate death.

The truck continued its destructive path, hitting a parked pickup, the Honda car, and both motorcycles. In total, 22 people were involved in the accident, with 18 fatalities and four others sustaining injuries.

The injured were transported to Dasochris Hospital in Gbaga, while the deceased were taken to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu.

Akinwunmi Fasakin, the Sector Commander of the FRSC, expressed his deep sorrow over the reckless driving that led to the accident.

He urged motorists to be more vigilant, adhere to road signs, and observe speed limits to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
