Gunmen murder businessman in Ondo

A wave of shock and sorrow has gripped the residents of Ore, the headquarters of Odigbo Local Government Area in Ondo State, following the assassination of a prominent businessman, Ismaila Awoyinka.

The tragic incident occurred on Saturday evening when gunmen ambushed Awoyinka at his residence, located opposite Caring Heart Mega School in the Idi Mango area.

According to local sources, the businessman, a well-known dealer in building materials, had just returned home after attending Ramadan prayers at the mosque when the assailants struck.

“He was assassinated the moment he left the mosque after Taraweeh prayer (a voluntary prayer during Ramadan), very close to his house, around 8:35 p.m. on Saturday.

After he left the mosque, some persons dressed in white attire alighted from a motorcycle and stayed around the place.

“As he (deceased) was about to enter his house, they ambushed him and shot him. He was shot at close range, and he died on the spot,” the source said.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident and said an investigation had commenced.

“The incident happened, and we have commenced an investigation into it,” the PPRO stated.
