 Hit and run driver kills 12 year old girl on Lagos Abeokuta expressway

A tragic incident unfolded along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway as a speeding driver, yet to be identified, struck and killed a 12-year-old girl while injuring her 15-year-old sister.

According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, the accident occurred on Monday at the Ogundare bus stop.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, while the injured sister is receiving medical treatment.

“On Monday, February 24, 2025, at about 3:35 pm, a yet-to-be-identified driver, while plying the BRT lane at high speed at Ogundare bus stop along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, hit two female pedestrians, siblings aged 12 and 15, on their way back from school,” the statement read.

Hundeyin said the victims sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Orile-Agege General Hospital for treatment. Sadly, the 12-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries, while her sister was later transferred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital for further medical care.

The Commissioner of Police, OlohundareJimoh, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and urged motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, speed limits, and safe driving practices.

“The Commissioner of Police commiserates with the bereaved family and assures that the police will ensure a speedy and conclusive investigation to bring the culprit to justice,” the statement added.
