An Area Court sitting in Jos, Plateau State, has sentenced James Emmanuel to 18 months in prison for criminal trespass and stealing a phone charger worth N5,000.

Judge Shawomi Bokkos handed down the sentence after Emmanuel pleaded guilty to the charges.

The court, however, gave him the option of paying a N100,000 fine instead of serving the full jail term.

During the hearing, police prosecutor Insp. Daniel Damulak informed the court that the case was reported at A Division police station on Jan. 29 by the complainant, Mr. Israel Joshua.

According to the prosecutor, Joshua stated that Emmanuel broke into his home by passing through the ceiling, causing damage to the apartment’s electrical wiring before stealing the charger.

Damulak added that during the police investigation, Emmanuel admitted to committing the crime.

The charges were filed under the Plateau State Penal Code law of Northern Nigeria.
