Man arrested for reportedly killing brother during dispute over food in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has taken a 37-year-old man, Kosisochukwu Okafor, into custody for allegedly causing the death of his elder brother, Emmanuel Okafor, following a domestic dispute.
The tragic incident took place on Friday at Adegbe Village in Abagana, located within the Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State. Eyewitness accounts reveal that a disagreement over the use of food items in their household escalated into a violent altercation.
“It was during a fight after a heated argument that the junior brother used a stick to pierce his chest and he fell. The victim was rushed to the hospital and was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty,” an eyewitness reported.
Confirming the incident on Saturday, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that officers from the Abagana Police Divisional Headquarters, along with local vigilante operatives, arrested the suspect around 7 p.m. on Friday.
Ikenga said, “Police operatives attached to the Abagana Police Divisional Headquarters and vigilante operatives in Abagana on February 7, 2025, by 7 p.m. arrested one Anthony Kosisochukwu Okafor, aged 37 years, of Adegbe Village, Abagana, Njikoka LGA, over the death of his elder brother, Mr. Emmanuel Okafor, aged 45 years.
“The suspect confessed to having engaged the victim in a fight over a heated argument about using foodstuffs in the house. Kosisochukwu was said to have used a stick to pierce the deceased’s chest. The victim was rushed to the hospital and was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.”
Describing the case as deeply troubling, Ikenga emphasized the need for peaceful conflict resolution within families. “This incident is quite disturbing and highlights the importance of addressing domestic violence and conflicts amongst family members. It also underscores the need to manage conflicts and emotions healthily and constructively to avoid irreparable consequences,” he added.
The case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka. Authorities have indicated that the suspect will face charges in court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
