Zambian music icon Wesley Chibambo dies in tragic road accident

Renowned Zambian musician Wesley Chibambo, also known as Dandy Krazy, has passed away following a severe road accident that occurred on New Year’s Eve.

The 47-year-old artist succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Thursday after battling for his life at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka.

The accident took place on Tuesday at approximately 19:10 near the Green Leaf area along the Great North Road, close to Kapiri Mposhi. According to Charity Munganga, the Central Province police commissioner, the collision involved a Shacman truck, a Toyota Allex, and a Nissan Hardbody.

“The accident happened when the driver of a Shacman truck Reg. NO. ADF 1575, T ADF 1576, identified as Kachalwa Lweendo aged 28, coming from Kapiri Mposhi to Kabwe direction with one passenger on board, lost control of his truck due to excessive speed and hit into a Toyota Allex [Registration number] ADD 5673 and a Nissan Hardbody Reg. NO. ABJ 6469 coming from the opposite direction,” Munganga said in a statement.

She confirmed that the driver of the Toyota Allex and two passengers were killed instantly, while Dandy Krazy, who was among the occupants, sustained critical injuries. The driver of the Nissan Hardbody, who was alone in the vehicle, also died on the spot.

Police reported that the truck driver and his passenger were unharmed. However, the driver fled the scene after providing his details to officers.

President Hakainde Hichilema expressed his condolences, praising the late musician as an “extraordinary artist.” In a heartfelt Facebook post, the president wrote, “His music and charisma touched lives far and wide, crossing all boundaries and bringing people together.”

Dandy Krazy’s daughter, Comfort, paid an emotional tribute: “Daddy, you have answered the Lord’s call on Shanice’s birthday, your third born. Even in death, we will always love you, Papa. I have no time to question God but agree to his will, but Lord, your will hurts.”

Dandy Krazy was celebrated for using his music to address political and social issues. His iconic song Donchi Kubeba played a pivotal role in the Patriotic Front’s victory in the 2011 elections. The track, which translates to “Don’t Tell Them,” criticized inequality and the lack of opportunities in Zambia.

The musician’s discography includes hits like Chintelelwe and collaborations such as Chipuba Chandi by Indi K and Temperature by Uniq. His passing marks a significant loss to Zambia’s music industry and cultural heritage.
