AFCON qualifiers: CAF fines Libya $50,000 over misconduct against Benin

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a $50,000 fine on Libya and ordered the country to play its next two home matches behind closed doors.
The penalty comes in response to incidents of misconduct by Libyan supporters and officials during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Benin, held on November 18 in Benghazi.
This sanction adds to Libya’s growing controversies in the AFCON qualifiers. In October, the country was at the center of a scandal involving Nigeria’s Super Eagles. Libya diverted Nigeria’s team aircraft to an unsafe airport, causing delays and forcing CAF to cancel the match and award Nigeria three points.
In a separate development, CAF dismissed Guinea’s appeal to disqualify Tanzania from the 2024 AFCON. Guinea had alleged that Tanzanian substitute Ibrahim Ame wore a jersey number (26) not listed on the official team sheet. However, CAF’s disciplinary committee found no merit in the claim and ruled in favor of Tanzania.
