JUST IN: Former lawmaker, Farouk Lawan released from prison after serving 5-year sentence
Farouk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives, has been released from the Kuje Correctional Facility after serving a five-year jail term.
His release occurred on Tuesday morning.
Lawan, who previously served as the Chairman of the House of Representatives’ probe panel on the oil subsidy regime, was sentenced to a total of seven years in prison for receiving a $3 million bribe from oil magnate Femi Otedola.

Justice Angela Otaluka of the FCT High Court at Apo found Lawan guilty on all three counts of charges brought against him by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
In addition to his prison sentence, the judge ordered him to refund $500,000 to the federal government.
