Another state govt to begin payment of N70 000 minimum wage in October

In a significant step toward enhancing civil servants welfare, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000.

The announcement was made by the state’s Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Hauwa Nuru, in Ilorin on Saturday. She confirmed that the new wage will take immediate effect from October 2024, covering all public service employees, including those in the 16 Local Government Areas.

According to Nuru, the decision follows a successful tripartite meeting involving representatives of the government, labor leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), and organized private sector representatives.

“We are grateful to Governor AbdulRazaq for granting the committee full autonomy to reach a consensus that benefits everyone,” Nuru said.

She emphasized that the prompt implementation of the new wage reflects the governor’s dedication to the welfare of public servants and residents. “This decision demonstrates the governor’s proactive, worker-friendly approach and commitment to fostering growth and prosperity across the state,” Nuru added.

The Finance Commissioner also praised the cooperation between labor unions and the state government, which was instrumental in achieving the agreement.

She described the wage increase as a testament to Kwara State’s commitment to promoting the welfare of its workforce.
