Again Pro Wike supporters hit Port Harcourt streets over Rivers LG polls

Supporters of Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, took to the streets once more on Saturday morning, demonstrating peacefully near the Polio Club in the Government Reserved Area (GRA) of Port Harcourt.

This marked their second protest in under 48 hours against the ongoing local government elections in Rivers State.

The predominantly youth-led group asserted that there were no legitimate council elections happening in the state.

They expressed their commitment to following a Federal High Court ruling from Abuja that instructed the police and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to refrain from involvement in the elections.

One protester, Henry Bobmanuel, stated, “We are law-abiding citizens; that’s why we are not participating in the elections. We gathered here to tell the world that there is no local council election in Rivers State.”

While the protest unfolded, elections proceeded across all 23 local government areas in Rivers, with election materials being distributed to wards and units.

In a separate incident, suspected arsonists targeted the All Progressives Congress (APC) secretariat on Port Harcourt-Aba Road in the early hours of Saturday, causing significant damage. The explosion destroyed the gate, windows, and doors of the building.

The APC Chairman, Tony Okocha, who assessed the aftermath of the attack, condemned the act as “a reign of terror, horror, and impunity.

Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the state police command, noted that she had yet to receive any reports regarding the incident.
