The Nigerian Senate has summoned Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, to address the long-standing and dire condition of the Old Oyo-Ogbomosho Road, which has left travellers stranded and frustrated for years.

This decision came after Senator Buhari Abdulfatai (APC, Oyo North) raised a motion of urgent public importance during Wednesday’s plenary session.

The senator emphasized the road’s crucial role as a key link between Nigeria’s South and North regions, stating that despite over a decade of government efforts to repair the road, it remains in a state of disrepair.

Senator Abdulfatai expressed his concern over the hardships faced by travellers due to the road’s poor condition, which has led to frequent accidents and gridlock, especially for heavy-duty vehicles.

The Senate unanimously backed the motion, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio directing the Senate Committee on Works to investigate the issue and report back within three weeks.

Minister Umahi has been called to appear before the committee to explain the long delays in completing the road, which was awarded over a decade ago.

Lawmakers are eager for answers and are hoping this inquiry will lead to a resolution, bringing much-needed relief to motorists and commuters who have endured years of hardship due to the deteriorating state of the Old Oyo-Ogbomosho Road.
