AFCON 2025 Nwabali reveals secret of shootout win over Egypt

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has attributed Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations to a strong collective effort following the team’s bronze medal victory over Egypt.

Nigeria secured the bronze after a goalless draw in regulation time, before edging Egypt 4–2 on penalties, with Nwabali emerging as the hero of the shootout. The goalkeeper saved two spot-kicks to seal the win and was subsequently named Man of the Match.

Reflecting on the third-place play-off, Nwabali described the encounter as tense, noting that both sides were cautious in their approach.

“It was a very difficult match against a great Egyptian team; Nobody wanted to make a mistake,” he said.

The goalkeeper explained that remaining composed during the penalty shootout was crucial to Nigeria’s success.

“I stayed calm, read the takers and trusted my instincts; Thankfully, it worked for us,” he said.

Nwabali also credited teamwork and defensive solidity for the Super Eagles’ podium finish.

“This victory came from collective effort. The defenders were incredible, and everyone stayed united,” he noted.

Despite his individual accolade, the shot-stopper insisted that the team’s achievement mattered more.

“Being Man of the Match feels good, but winning the bronze medal for Nigeria matters more,” he said.

He further highlighted the squad’s resilience, especially after facing setbacks earlier in the competition.

“We had setbacks, but we stayed focused and believed in ourselves until the end,” Nwabali added.

Nigeria concluded their AFCON Morocco 2025 campaign on the podium, with Nwabali’s penalty heroics playing a decisive role in the bronze medal finish.
