Tambuwal reacts to US airstrikes in Sokoto, cautions against targeting civilians

Former Sokoto State governor and Senator representing Sokoto South, Aminu Tambuwal, has reacted to reports of airstrikes carried out by the United States in parts of the state, urging that innocent civilians must not be harmed in counterterrorism operations.
In a statement posted on his verified X handle on Friday, Tambuwal said he was engaging relevant security authorities to obtain full details of the operation and ensure that appropriate safeguards were observed.
He described the reported airstrike as part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts undertaken through cooperation between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United States, while calling on residents to remain calm and law-abiding as investigations continue.
“I have noted the reports concerning an airstrike carried out as part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts through cooperation between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United States,” Tambuwal said. “I urge our communities to remain calm and law-abiding as relevant authorities clarify the circumstances surrounding the operation.”
The former governor stressed that security operations are aimed at criminal and terrorist elements threatening public safety, not innocent civilians who are often victims of insecurity themselves.
“It is important to reassure the public that counterterrorism operations are targeted at criminal and terrorist elements… and not at innocent civilians,” he said, adding that the protection of civilian lives must remain central to all legitimate security actions.
Tambuwal also commended the Nigerian military and other security agencies for their efforts in tackling terrorism and banditry, noting that they often operate under difficult conditions and in collaboration with international partners.
“I commend the courage and professionalism of our military and security forces… Their sacrifice and commitment to restoring peace and stability deserve our full support and cooperation,” he stated.
He further called on community leaders, traditional institutions and residents to support security agencies by sharing credible information and resisting misinformation capable of fueling fear or tension.
According to him, unity, vigilance and cooperation with lawful security efforts remain key to achieving lasting peace in Sokoto State and across Nigeria.
