Super Eagles appoint new captain

Nigeria’s senior men’s national football team, the Super Eagles, have appointed a new captain following recent leadership changes within the squad.
The decision comes after the retirement of stand-in skipper William Troost-Ekong and long-serving captain Ahmed Musa, leaving the team without a designated on-field leader.
Beşiktaş midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has now been handed the captain’s armband, assuming leadership duties for one of Africa’s most decorated national teams.
Confirming the development, the Super Eagles’ official social media handle announced on Friday: “Wilfred Ndidi has been named Captain of the Super Eagles and says the responsibility means everything as Nigeria heads to Morocco.”
Ndidi will lead the three-time African champions at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, where Nigeria will be chasing continental success once again.
The midfielder stressed the importance of unity within the squad as preparations intensify for the tournament, urging his teammates to believe in their collective strength.
“It’s a huge responsibility, and with the help of the players, I think everything will go smoothly,” the former Leicester City player told the Super Eagles media team.
“I’ve had a conversation with a couple of players, just some of the older players. You know, just try to make them understand the reason why we’re here. Also, [you] need the support from the staff. We’re all in this together,” Ndidi added.
The captaincy change follows the exit of Ahmed Musa, who had not featured regularly for Nigeria in recent months and was an unused substitute during the 2023 AFCON, as well as the unexpected retirement of Troost-Ekong.
Troost-Ekong had been included in the Super Eagles’ provisional squad for the 2025 AFCON but announced his retirement from international football before the final list was released, a move that surprised many Nigerian fans.
Nigeria have been drawn in Group C of the 2025 AFCON alongside Tanzania, Uganda and Tunisia. The Super Eagles will open their campaign on December 23.
