Tragedy as 8 university’s students die in road crash

A late-night road accident has claimed the lives of eight students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) .
The crash happened on Wednesday at about 2:30 a.m. opposite Unity Bank along Zaria Road. It involved a trailer and a bus carrying eleven students.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), emergency responders found seven students already dead at the site, while another victim passed away in the hospital, raising the casualty figure to eight. The remaining three students, all males like the deceased, are currently receiving treatment.
The university community has been thrown into mourning, but the incident has also reignited wider concerns about the dangers of night travel among students, particularly during exam seasons and festive periods.
An eyewitness told Channels TV that the bus had been speeding and attempted an improper overtaking, a move that caused the driver to lose control before ramming into the trailer.
FRSC officials say a comprehensive investigation is ongoing. Corps Commander Olajide Mogaji confirmed the probe and used the opportunity to issue what he termed a crucial seasonal caution to both private and commercial motorists.
Mogaji warned against night travel, speeding, dangerous manoeuvres, fatigue, and driving under the influence.
“The government needs you alive and wants you to live life to the fullest this festive season and beyond,” he said, urging the public to call the FRSC toll-free line 122 to report emergencies or crashes.
Students and observers say the University of Jos’ silence has deepened anxiety as affected families await official communication. As of the time this report was filed, the institution had not released any statement on the deaths or the ongoing inquiry.
The tragedy has also reopened broader conversations within the Plateau academic community about the need for stronger transport policies, safer mobility practices for students, and improved emergency response measures around university campuses.
