17 killed as armed group attacks returning IDPs in Taraba

At least 17 people lost their lives and eight others sustained injuries on Wednesday when gunmen, believed to be members of a tribal militia, carried out a coordinated assault on returning Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Tse Ajogo, a community in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State.

Witnesses said the assailants invaded the village around 6 a.m., shooting at residents and newly resettled IDPs. Several individuals are still missing, and seven homes were reportedly destroyed during the raid.

Security analyst Zagozola Makama noted that this is the second attack targeting returnees in Tse Ajogo in less than two months, underscoring the community’s persistent vulnerability.

The settlement, situated roughly four kilometres from Rafin Kada, has faced repeated incursions, with sources describing Wednesday’s attackers as heavily armed and intent on disrupting ongoing resettlement efforts.

Authorities have urged increased security surveillance in the area and directed troops to maintain active patrols along major routes to safeguard returning residents.

Security agencies are said to be pursuing the perpetrators, while Tiv communities across Taraba have been cautioned to remain alert and promptly report unusual activities. Community leaders have also called for calm and prayed for the restoration of peace.
