APC govs endorse Tinubu’s security overhaul, vow stronger support across states

Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress have thrown their weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s “sweeping re-engineering of Nigeria’s security architecture.”
In October, Tinubu approved major changes in the hierarchy of the Service Chiefs. While the Presidency dismissed speculation linking the move to an alleged coup plot, it described the reorganisation as an effort to “inject new direction” into the armed forces.
The governors reiterated that safeguarding lives and property remains a core responsibility they intend to reinforce across their respective states.
Their position followed a two-day strategic retreat of the Progressive Governors Forum in Lagos, where the leaders assessed national issues, including security coordination, economic reforms and grassroots governance.
The Forum’s resolutions were outlined in a statement titled “APC Governors Back Tinubu On Security Measures, Pledges Complementary Measures,” signed by Gboyega Akosile, spokesperson to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on December 6, 2025.
Reading the communiqué, the Forum’s Chairman and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, said the governors reviewed the security landscape and welcomed what they described as improved synergy among security agencies.
The statement read: “The Forum reviewed the security situation across the country and expressed appreciation for the improved coordination between federal, state and local security structures, as well as the courage and sacrifices of security agencies and community volunteers. We then resolved to strengthen local security architecture in all the member states.”
They also commended Tinubu for ongoing reforms, noting: “The Forum commended Mr. President for the ongoing re-engineering in the security architecture of the country. Governors reiterated that safety of lives and property remains a non-negotiable obligation of government. We resolved to continue strengthening community-based security initiatives, intelligence gathering and conflict-prevention mechanisms, while supporting victims of violence and disaster.”
Turning to the economy, the governors acknowledged the strain on citizens resulting from recent macroeconomic adjustments.
Uzodimma stated: “Recognising the temporary burdens that accompany necessary macro-economic reforms, the Forum reviewed the state of the economy and the cost-of-living pressures being experienced by citizens. Governors acknowledged the resilience and patience of Nigerians and expressed deep appreciation for the sacrifices being made in the collective interest of a stronger and more inclusive economy.”
He said the Forum resolved to scale up support for food production, small businesses, youth employment and social protection for vulnerable groups.
“The Progressive Governors are committed to work closely with Federal institutions and local governments to ensure that things keep improving, that no group is left behind, and that the gains of reforms continue to translate into visible improvements in the quality of life of the people,” the communiqué added.
The Forum also underscored infrastructure and urban renewal as crucial to economic growth, applauding Lagos State for its “pioneering role in transport reforms, urban regeneration and innovative financing models.”
It pledged increased investment in roads, housing, public transport, sanitation, digital connectivity and climate-friendly infrastructure, with an emphasis on inclusion.
On grassroots governance, Uzodimma said: “The Forum reiterated that effective local governance is central to delivering the Renewed Hope Agenda at the grassroots. Governors resolved to deepen reforms aimed at improving transparency, accountability and service delivery in local government administration, within the framework of the Constitution and in partnership with relevant stakeholders.”
They also committed to expanding citizen feedback systems, noting: “The Forum affirmed that listening to the people, explaining government policies clearly, and adjusting implementation strategies based on feedback are essential to building trust and sustaining democratic legitimacy.”
The governors reaffirmed loyalty to the party, commending the APC leadership for efforts to entrench discipline and internal democracy.
“The Forum reaffirmed its full support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the policies of APC governments at all levels. PGF emphasised that Progressive Governors see themselves as trustees of the people’s mandate and as a committee of leaders jointly responsible for translating the aspirations of Nigerians into tangible social and economic outcomes across the federation,” it concluded.
