What I will do to tackle insecurity Defence Minister Musa

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, retired Gen. Christopher Musa, says he will intensify efforts toward addressing the nation’s security difficulties through closer coordination and unified actions across the Armed Forces.

Speaking shortly after assuming duty at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Abuja, Musa said, “Our goal is to overwhelm the enemy through jointness and seamless coordination.”

He announced that a thorough assessment of all theatre commands and inter-service operations would commence immediately, explaining that bridging gaps between strategy and execution was essential for national security. He added that safeguarding the country remained a shared responsibility.

Musa, who previously served as Chief of Defence Staff before his appointment by President Bola Tinubu, also assured that troop welfare would remain a central priority.

“Welfare is not administrative; it is strategic. Morale is a force multiplier. Our personnel must receive their kits on time. Their operational allowances must be paid promptly.

“Accommodation, medical care, and support for injured personnel and families of the fallen must be priorities,” he said.

He maintained that those serving on the frontlines deserved unwavering respect and support, adding that the ministry would work to ensure efficient delivery of benefits to troops and their families.

Musa further called for collaboration among all stakeholders to confront both kinetic and non-kinetic aspects of insecurity, highlighting governance, justice, equity and fairness as integral to long-term stability.

“The shedding of innocent blood must end. Our children deserve to return to school. Farmers must return to their farms. Many of these issues require a comprehensive, balanced approach,” he said.

He reaffirmed his commitment to lead with fairness, integrity and accountability.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr. Richard Pheelangwa, described Musa’s return as “a homecoming” and assured him of the staff’s support. He said the minister’s appointment was a testament to the nation’s trust in his experience and character.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, also expressed the Armed Forces’ readiness to work closely with the minister.

“The Minister is not new to this ministry. As the Permanent Secretary rightly noted, he is a familiar figure who has always been accessible and supportive.

“We are glad to have him back, and we look forward to a more robust and coordinated approach to solving our security challenges,” he said.

Oluyede stressed the importance of unity and sincerity of purpose in restoring public confidence in the military.
