Merino saves Arsenal as Chelsea earn point despite Caicedo red card

Mikel Merino spared Arsenal’s blushes on Sunday as the Premier League leaders battled to a 1-1 draw with 10-man Chelsea in a tense and physical London derby at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea were reduced to 10 men shortly before halftime when Moises Caicedo was dismissed for a crude foul on Merino after a VAR review. Even with the numerical disadvantage, the hosts struck first through Trevoh Chalobah’s second-half header, only for Merino to haul Arsenal level and preserve their lead at the top of the table.

The Gunners remain five points clear of Manchester City, who defeated Newcastle a day earlier, and hold a six-point cushion over Chelsea in third place.

At the end of a bruising contest, Arsenal were left frustrated not to have widened the gap on their rivals, while Chelsea could take solace in avoiding a defeat that might have harmed their early title push. Despite the stalemate, Arsenal still appear well placed to chase their first league crown since 2004, and Chelsea’s gritty performance underlined their potential to challenge them.

Arsenal extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 17 matches, with 14 wins in that sequence. Chelsea, meanwhile, have now gone seven games without defeat. Both sides arrived buoyed by midweek Champions League victories — Chelsea’s emphatic 3-0 win against Barcelona and Arsenal’s 3-1 triumph over Bayern Munich.

The derby, however, quickly descended into a fierce battle. With William Saliba sidelined, Arsenal had to cope with a reshuffled back line as both teams racked up early bookings. Martin Zubimendi hauled down Reece James, Marc Cucurella clattered into Bukayo Saka, Christhian Mosquera felled Joao Pedro, and Riccardo Calafiori pulled back James in a cynical challenge.

Saka tested Robert Sanchez with a sharp effort at the near post as tempers continued to flare. Chelsea’s 18-year-old prospect Estevao Willian, fresh off his heroics against Barcelona, drove over from close range in their first real opening. Enzo Fernandez later forced David Raya into action from distance.

The match tipped further toward chaos in the 38th minute when Caicedo was shown a red card for catching Merino on the ankle — the Blues’ sixth sending-off across all competitions this season. Moments later, a dangerous elbow from Piero Hincapie to Chalobah brought protest from Chelsea players, though no further punishment followed. Sanchez denied Gabriel Martinelli with a fine save in stoppage time as Arsenal pushed for the breakthrough.

Chelsea eventually took advantage of their set-piece strength, as James delivered a superb corner and Chalobah rose at the near post to glance his header into the far corner in the 48th minute — their ninth set-piece goal of the campaign.

Mikel Arteta responded by introducing Martin Odegaard and Noni Madueke, who received jeers and chants of “Chelsea reject” from home supporters. The changes paid off quickly, with Merino equalising in the 59th minute. Saka weaved past Cucurella and whipped in a brilliant delivery that Merino met with a powerful header beyond Sanchez — his fourth goal of the season, once again deployed in an advanced role.

The final moments were frenetic, with Sanchez producing excellent saves to deny both Saka and Merino. Arsenal, however, could not find a decisive strike.
