White House on lockdown over shooting of 2 National Guard troops
The White House and several nearby federal buildings were placed on lockdown on Wednesday following a shooting close to the presidential residence that left two members of the National Guard wounded.
Initial reports from Governor Patrick Morrisey suggested the soldiers had died, but he later clarified that he was receiving “conflicting reports” regarding their condition and expected to provide further updates once confirmed.
“We are now receiving conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information,” he said in a post on X. ‘Our prayers are with these brave service members, their families, and the entire Guard community.”
At the time of the attack, President Donald Trump was at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida, according to reports. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt noted that officials were fully engaged with the situation. “The White House is aware and actively monitoring this tragic situation. The President has been briefed,” she said.
Police in Washington, DC, confirmed that a suspect had been taken into custody. National Guard personnel have been deployed across the capital for several months as part of Trump’s initiative to curb crime in the city.
Reacting on Truth Social, Trump wrote, “The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price.”
