Kogi:  Curfew declared in local government over bandit attack

The Chairman of Yagba West Local Government Area in Kogi State, Tosin Olokun, has introduced a dusk-to-dawn curfew across the council in response to renewed bandit incursions.

According to the local government authorities, the move is part of a broader strategy to curb the activities of armed groups threatening security in the area.

The announcement was made through a statement released over the weekend by the Chairman’s Chief Press Secretary, Adeyemi Babarinde Sunday, in Lokoja.

The curfew, which takes immediate effect, applies to all communities within Yagba West and will run from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. daily.

The Chairman explained that intelligence gathered in recent days, coupled with ongoing operations targeting criminal hideouts along border communities and forest zones, necessitated the restriction.

He noted that limiting movement at night would enable security operatives to conduct coordinated patrols, surveillance operations, and clampdowns with minimal interference.

“The safety of our people remains our top priority. This curfew is a proactive step to strengthen ongoing operations and prevent criminal infiltration across our communities,” the Chairman said.

He called on residents to adhere strictly to the new directive, warning that defaulters or anyone aiding criminal activity would face serious sanctions.

Olokun also praised the efforts of the Joint Task Force, Hunters, Vigilantes, and other security units for their dedication to safeguarding the council area, assuring them of continuous support from the local government.

He further urged community leaders and youth groups to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious individuals or movements to nearby security formations, emphasising that collective cooperation is crucial to maintaining peace across Yagba West.
