Police detain suspect as explosion sparks panic in Owo

Police in Ondo State have taken a suspect into custody following a loud explosion that rattled the Owo area on Saturday.
The blast, which occurred close to a commercial bank in Owo Local Government Area, sent residents and commuters running for cover.
Thick smoke was seen rising briefly from the location, prompting traders to abandon their stalls and nearby shop owners to shut their businesses abruptly.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Ondo State Police Command confirmed that investigations are underway. The Command’s spokesperson, Olusola Ayanlade, said the incident was caused by a banger and identified the suspect as Ayoola Daniel Ojumu from Owo.
“One Ayoola Daniel Ojumu of Owo has been arrested in connection with the incident and has confessed to his role. His accomplice, who reportedly set off the banger, remains at large, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend them,” he stated.
Ayanlade cautioned that the security agency would not permit any disturbance of public order, especially as the festive season approaches.
“Members of the public in Ondo State, particularly parents and guardians, are advised to prevail over their wards before, during, and after the festive period. The Police Command will take decisive action against any attempts to disrupt peace and public safety,” the police spokesman said.
He encouraged residents to stay calm and alert, urging them to report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
“The suspect in custody will be charged to court upon conclusion of the investigation. The Command urges residents to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies to enhance community safety,” he concluded.
