The Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in the ongoing Anambra State election, George Moghalu, has been defeated in his own polling unit by Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

The result, announced by the presiding officer, Okonkwo Ebere, at about 2:50 p.m., showed that Soludo polled 57 votes, while Moghalu garnered 22 votes. The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Nicholas Ukachukwu, came third with 5 votes.

The total number of valid votes at the unit stood at 85, representing less than 20 per cent of the 463 registered voters in the area.

Moghalu, who cast his ballot around 11:40 a.m. at Uruagu Ward 1, Nnewi North Local Government Area, arrived at the polling station with his family and close associates.

After voting, the LP candidate lamented incidents of vote buying and the low voter turnout reported across the state. He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enhance the management of the poll.

“People are asking us to give them money before they can vote,” a Labour Party agent said.

The agent also expressed concern over the low turnout recorded in several polling centres.
