Death row inmate escapes from prison

A death row inmate, Abba Hassan, has escaped from the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Potiskum, Yobe State, during the early hours of Friday, October 31, 2025.

The Yobe State Police Command spokesperson, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Saturday, November 1. According to Abdulkarim, the fugitive, identified as Abba Hassan, is a native of Maiduguri in Borno State.

The statement urged residents, security agencies, transport workers, community leaders, and vigilante groups across Yobe and neighbouring states to remain alert and report any information that could assist in locating and re-arresting the escapee.

“I want to use this opportunity to inform you that, do not attempt to confront or apprehend him on your own,” the statement warned.

For safety reasons, Abdulkarim advised anyone who sights the fugitive to promptly report to the nearest police station or correctional facility.

He further appealed to the public to continue cooperating with security agencies as efforts are intensified to ensure public safety and capture the fleeing inmate.
