Hisbah calls off court-ordered marriage of popular Kano TikTokers

The Kano Hisbah Board has called off the planned wedding between well-known TikTok personalities Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda.
A magistrate court had earlier instructed the board to facilitate the marriage within 60 days, warning that any delay or refusal would constitute contempt of court.
The directive came after the Kano State Censorship Board arrested the duo for sharing videos deemed “immoral and demeaning” on social media. The clips, which showed Wushirya shirtless and showing affection toward Yar Guda, were said to contravene state laws banning obscene or sexually suggestive material.
According to Punch, Hisbah’s director-general, Abba Sufi, said an investigation revealed that Wushirya only consented to marry Yar Guda to avoid prosecution, not because of genuine affection.
He explained that after uncovering this, the board decided to annul the arrangement and return the matter to the presiding judge for further directives.
“Mai Wushirya told us that he lied to the court that he and Yar Guda were in love to evade prosecution,” Sufi said.
“With this development, we have cancelled the wedding and have resolved to refer the matter to the judge who gave the order for appropriate action.”
The court’s earlier decision mandating the TikTokers to marry had stirred widespread criticism. Many Nigerians described the ruling as an infringement on individual rights.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) also condemned the order, labelling it “unconstitutional” and emphasizing that marriage is a voluntary act that cannot be compelled by law.
