Tension has gripped travellers along the Ilorin–Egbe highway after armed bandits attacked a commercial bus between Eruku and Egbe, a border community linking Kwara and Kogi states.

According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon when the gunmen, reportedly in large numbers, ambushed the vehicle and began shooting indiscriminately.

According to a report by Sahara Reporters, sources said that the assailants “suddenly emerged from the bush and opened fire on the vehicle,” adding that the bullets struck the driver during the assault.

A video obtained by the outlet showed several bullet holes riddling the bus, with visible bloodstains on the driver’s side. The injured driver was said to be from Isanlu, while among the passengers were a man from Egbe and another unidentified Hausa trader.

Residents have appealed to the Chairman of Yagba East Local Government to work closely with his counterpart in Yagba West to tackle the growing banditry crisis along the Kwara–Kogi boundary.

The Ilorin–Egbe highway, a major route for travellers and traders, has witnessed repeated attacks in recent months, fuelling widespread fear among commuters.
