President Bola Tinubu on Friday appointed Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Sunday Aneke as the 23rd Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), marking a new chapter for the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). His appointment underscores the administration’s commitment to professionalism, strategic leadership, and enhanced national security.

Below are some of the seven things to know about the new air chief.

From Makurdi to the Skies

Born on February 20, 1972, in Makurdi, Benue State, Aneke hails from Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. His early years at Army Children School and Government College, Kaduna, laid the foundation for a disciplined and focused career.

Military and Academic Excellence
Aneke entered the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) as part of the 40th Regular Combatant Course and was commissioned into the Nigerian Air Force as a Pilot Officer in 1993.He holds a B.Sc. in Physics, a Postgraduate Diploma in Management, and two Master’s degrees — in International Affairs and Diplomacy (Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria) and in Political Economy and Development Studies (University of Abuja). He also earned a certificate in Aviation Safety Management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Florida, and is currently pursuing a PhD.

Global Training and Strategic Exposure

The new Air Chief trained at top military institutions, including the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, and the U.S. Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, where he obtained a Master’s in Strategic Studies.

Distinguished Career Path

Aneke has held key appointments such as Director of Policy, Director of Safety, Deputy Director of Operations, and Deputy Commandant of the NDA. Before his elevation, he was Air Officer Commanding, Mobility Command, Yenagoa — where he strengthened NAF’s air mobility and joint operations capability.

Veteran Pilot and International Operator

With more than 4,359 flying hours, Aneke is type-rated on multiple aircraft, including the Dornier 228, Falcon 900, Gulfstream 550, and Hawker 4000. His operational record spans peacekeeping in the Democratic Republic of Congo and counter-insurgency operations in Nigeria’s Niger Delta and other theatres.

Family and Leadership Style

Married to Mrs. Ngozi Enderline Aneke, the couple has three sons — Chukwuebuka Kelvin, Ifeanyichukwu Brian, and Uchechukwu Jason. Known for his humility, intellect, and calm leadership, Aneke is expected to bring strategic foresight, innovation, and discipline to the Air Force’s next phase of transformation.
