UK reduces post study work period for foreign graduates

Beginning January 1, 2027, international students in the United Kingdom will have only 18 months to find employment after completing their studies, down from the current two-year post-study work period.

The change is part of a series of major immigration reforms outlined in a white paper released in May and formally confirmed by Parliament last week.

According to the UK Home Office, the adjustment is aimed at ensuring that international graduates contribute more meaningfully to the British economy and transition more efficiently into the workforce.

“It comes after data clearly showed that many holders had not transitioned into graduate-level employment as intended,” the Home Office said in a statement issued on October 14.

As part of the reforms, financial proof requirements for student visas will increase from the 2025–2026 academic year.

International students will now need to demonstrate they possess “sufficient funds” to support themselves, although the new minimum amount has not been disclosed.

Currently, students studying in London must show access to £1,483 per month for up to nine months, while those outside London must have £1,136 per month for the same period.

The Immigration Skills Charge (ISC) paid by employers sponsoring skilled foreign workers will rise by 32%, the Home Office confirmed.

The ministry said the additional revenue would be used to invest in British workers and reduce reliance on overseas recruitment.

“The Parliamentary process to increase the charge will begin later this week,” the statement added.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized that migrants must learn English to integrate fully into British society.

“If you come to this country, you must learn our language and play your part,” Mahmood said.

Under the new rule, migrants must meet an A-level equivalent standard in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

The English language test will be conducted by a Home Office–approved provider, and results will be verified as part of the visa application process.

The Home Office also announced plans to double the number of highly skilled migrants entering the UK through dedicated visa routes. The expanded list will include top-tier researchers, designers, and creatives in film and television to maintain the UK’s competitiveness in growth sectors.

Further adjustments, including updates to the Global Talent route, are expected in 2026, the department added.
