 Senate to screen Amupitan as new INEC chairman Thursday

Barring any last-minute changes, the Senate will on Thursday commence the screening of Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), who was recently nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This was confirmed in a statement released on Wednesday by Bullah Audu Bi-Allah, the Director of Information, Office of the Secretary of Research and Information at the National Assembly.

President Tinubu had, on Tuesday, formally requested the Senate to confirm Prof. Amupitan’s appointment, with the letter of nomination read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Tinubu said, “In accordance with the provisions of section 154 subsection 1 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Professor Joash Amupitan, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, as chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“Attached is his curriculum vitae, while hoping that the Senate will consider and confirm the appointment of the nominee in its usual expeditious manner. Please, accept, Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration.”

Bi-Allah in a statement Wednesday said, “The Office of the Secretary Research and Information wishes to notify members of the Press and the general public that the Senate will, tomorrow, Thursday, 16th October, 2025, conduct the screening of the nominee of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR , Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN), as Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“The exercise is scheduled to hold at the Senate Chamber, National Assembly Complex.”
