Madagascar parliament votes to impeach president amid protests

Madagascar’s lower house of parliament has voted to impeach President Andry Rajoelina for alleged desertion of duty, a move sharply rejected by the presidency as “devoid of any legal basis.”
The resolution passed on Tuesday with 130 votes in favor, comfortably surpassing the two-thirds majority required in the 163-member chamber.
The decision comes amid weeks of widespread street protests over governance concerns, which have reportedly prompted President Rajoelina to go into hiding.
The impeachment vote represents a significant challenge to Rajoelina’s leadership and underscores growing frustration among lawmakers and citizens alike regarding the country’s political direction.
