Vigilantes capture 4 suspected bandits in Kwara

At least four suspected bandits have been apprehended by a local vigilante group in Lade district, Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State, while three others were reportedly killed during a separate encounter.

Security analyst and counter-insurgency expert, Zagazola Makama, who disclosed the development on Sunday, said the arrests followed a well-coordinated operation by local security volunteers determined to curb criminal activities in the area.

According to Makama, the vigilantes recovered guns hidden inside sacks from the suspects, who were intercepted in a neighbouring village close to Lade.

“FOUR BANDITS ARRESTED IN KWARA. In a well-coordinated vigilante operation by a vigilante group in Lade district of Patigi LGA, four bandits were apprehended with guns concealed inside sacks in a neighboring village to Lade. Initially, three were neutralized in Lade while attempting to purchase fuel, leading to the arrest of these four others,” Makama said.

The recent development comes amid a worrying rise in bandit attacks across parts of Kwara State, particularly in communities bordering Niger and Kogi states. Over the past year, rural districts such as Patigi, Kaiama, and Baruten have experienced sporadic incursions by armed groups believed to be fleeing security operations in neighbouring North-Central states.

Residents say the attackers often target remote farming settlements, abducting villagers for ransom. In response, local vigilante network, working alongside conventional security agencies, have intensified surveillance and night patrols to prevent further attacks.

Security experts have long warned that Kwara’s northern corridor could become a safe haven for bandits if not adequately policed, given its vast forests and porous borders with Niger State, where banditry remains a persistent threat.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the latest arrests, but local sources described the operation as “a significant breakthrough” in the ongoing community-led effort to reclaim the area from criminal gangs.
