Super Eagles finally touch down in Uyo after mid-air scare in Angola

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have safely landed in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, following a tense mid-air incident that forced their flight to make an emergency return to Luanda, Angola.

The ValueJet aircraft carrying the national team reportedly suffered a cracked windscreen shortly after taking off from a refuelling stop in Angola.

According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the team was travelling back to Nigeria on Saturday after defeating Lesotho 2–1 in Polokwane, South Africa, when the technical issue occurred.

The flight was compelled to return to Luanda for safety inspections, leaving players and officials grounded for several hours as arrangements were made for an alternative aircraft.

After receiving flight clearance, the Super Eagles eventually departed Angola and arrived at the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo on Sunday morning.

The team is expected to resume training immediately as they prepare for their decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Squirrels of Benin Republic on Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Nigeria currently sit third in Group C with 14 points, behind Benin Republic and South Africa. The Eagles must win their final fixture and hope South Africa drop points against Rwanda to book an automatic World Cup spot.
