W Cup qualifiers Showdown looms as Benin lead Group C race ahead of Nigeria South Africa

The battle for top spot in Group C of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers will be decided on the final day, following another tense round of fixtures on Friday that left the race finely poised.

With one game left, Benin Republic hold a narrow two-point advantage at the summit, but South Africa and Nigeria remain firmly in contention for the single World Cup ticket from the group.

In Durban, South Africa were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Zimbabwe in a must-win encounter for Bafana Bafana.

The result leaves them second in the standings, meaning their decisive clash with Rwanda will determine whether they return to the World Cup for the first time since 2010.

Meanwhile in Polokwane, Nigeria kept their qualification hopes alive with a crucial 2–1 victory over Lesotho.

Captain William Troost-Ekong converted from the spot before Akor Adams added a second to secure all three points for the Super Eagles in a hard-fought contest.

Group leaders Benin Republic continued their impressive form with a disciplined 1–0 victory over Rwanda, courtesy of a late strike from Tosin Aiyegun. The win extended their lead and brought them within touching distance of a historic qualification.

As things stand, Benin Republic sit top with a two-point cushion, South Africa trail closely behind, and Nigeria remain within striking distance. The final round of matches promises a dramatic conclusion to one of the most competitive groups in the qualifiers.

Elsewhere in Group H, Tunisia sealed a commanding 6–0 triumph over São Tomé and Príncipe to continue their fine form.

Firas Chaouat, Elias Saad, and Ismael Gharbi were all on target, while Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane netted twice to complete a resounding victory for the former African champions, who have already secured their World Cup berth.
