Israeli cabinet finally approves Gaza ceasefire, hostage exchange deal with Hamas

Israel’s cabinet has formally approved a ceasefire agreement with Hamas, marking a major step toward ending the protracted conflict in Gaza and paving the way for the release of Israeli hostages held by the Palestinian militant group.
The deal, ratified in the early hours of Friday morning, comes about 24 hours after mediators publicly announced the framework. Under the terms of the agreement, fighting in Gaza is expected to halt within a day, followed by the release of Israeli hostages within 72 hours. In return, Israel will release a number of Palestinian prisoners.
Officials familiar with the negotiations said the arrangement also includes a gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, part of a broader peace initiative spearheaded by U.S. President Donald Trump. The plan aims to end more than two years of violence that has devastated the region and displaced tens of thousands of civilians.
The cabinet’s decision marks a significant breakthrough after months of intense international mediation involving Egypt, Qatar, and the United States.
Analysts say the move could ease tensions and open the door to renewed diplomatic engagement, though challenges remain in ensuring both sides adhere to the terms of the agreement.
Security officials in Israel said preparations are already underway to implement the ceasefire and oversee the prisoner exchange once the truce officially takes effect.
