BREAKING British Airways Flight to Abuja diverted after Nigerian Retired Air Vice Marshal dies onboard

A British Airways flight from London to Abuja was forced to make an emergency diversion to Barcelona’s El Prat Airport early Monday following the death of a retired Nigerian Air Vice Marshal from Anambra State onboard.

The flight, which departed Heathrow Airport at 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 5, was scheduled to arrive at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, by 5:00 a.m. However, around 1:30 a.m., the pilot declared a medical emergency, prompting an unscheduled landing in Barcelona.

According to reports, the deceased—an elderly man in his early 80s—had been unwell and was returning to Nigeria to seek medical treatment when he passed away mid-flight.

He was among the few surviving retired air vice marshals from Anambra State. The incident caused significant distress among passengers, leading to a second medical emergency involving a pregnant woman, though her condition remains unconfirmed.

British Airways issued an apology for the disruption, assuring passengers of support via email and the airline’s Live Chat feature.

A replacement aircraft was arranged to continue the journey, departing Barcelona at 2:50 p.m. local time and expected to arrive in Abuja at 5:45 p.m. Nigerian time.

The airline expressed gratitude for passengers’ patience and understanding.
