Police break silence on court order halting tinted glass permit enforcement

The Nigeria Police Force has  finally reacted to a Federal High Court order suspending the enforcement of tinted-glass permits for motorists

Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who spoke on the issue on Saturday, said the order, which reportedly restrained the police from arresting or prosecuting motorists over tinted vehicle windows, has not been formally served.

A Federal High Court sitting in Warri, Delta State, had on Friday granted an interim order in Suit No. FHC/WR/CS/103/2025: John Aikpokpo-Martins v. Inspector-General of Police & Nigeria Police Force, directing the police to halt enforcement of the permit pending the hearing of the substantive matter.

The order mandated the police to maintain the status quo, effectively putting on hold any action against motorists until the case is determined.

However, Hundeyin clarified via his official X handle that the Force had not yet received the court’s directive.

“While we have not been officially served the court order you’re making reference to, let me, in the meantime, show point number eight (of the same order) since you left that part out and focused only on point number six. Nigerians deserve a complete picture, not a skewed one,” he wrote.

His statement followed comments by human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, who had circulated excerpts of the ruling that appeared to restrain the police from implementing the regulation.

The police had in April 2023 resumed issuance of tinted-glass permits under the Police Specialised Services Automation Project after it was previously suspended in 2022.
