BREAKING: Arise News anchor killed in Abuja robbery attack

The Nigerian media industry has been thrown into deep mourning following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a rising broadcast journalist with Arise News Channel, who lost her life during an armed robbery attack at her Katampe residence in Abuja on Monday morning.
Fondly called “Sommie” by colleagues and friends, the 29-year-old journalist was admired for her eloquence, professionalism, and dedication to impactful storytelling.
Born on December 26, 1995, Somtochukwu built a reputation as a brilliant news anchor, reporter, and producer, earning respect within the media community and beyond.
A lawyer by training, she brought intellectual depth and strong analytical skills into her work.
In a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of management, Arise News described her as “a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers” and “a cherished member of the Arise News family.”
The channel expressed shock over her death, calling for a speedy investigation and justice for the culprits.
Her colleagues at Arise News have been left devastated, remembering her warmth, dedication, and infectious energy in the newsroom.
Tributes have also poured in from fellow journalists, viewers, and members of the legal community who admired her career.
The Nigeria Police have since launched an investigation into the incident, which has raised fresh concerns over insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory.
Maduagwu is survived by her parents, siblings, and extended family.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon as family, friends, and colleagues continue to grieve her sudden loss.
