World Cup winner, Boateng, announces retirement from football at 37

Jerome Boateng, a key figure in Germany’s 2014 World Cup triumph, has officially retired from football at the age of 37.
The former Bayern Munich defender shared a one-minute video on his social media accounts on Friday, reflecting on his journey and thanking those who supported him.
“I played for a long time, for big clubs, for my country. I learned, won, lost, and grew through it all,” Boateng said in a clip posted on Instagram, which featured highlights from his career.
“Football has given me a lot, now it’s time to move on. Not because I have to, but because I’m ready.“I’m grateful to the teams, the fans, the people who supported me. And above all, my family, my children. They’ve always been there for me.”
Boateng earned 76 caps for Germany, scoring once, and lifted two Champions League trophies with Bayern Munich in 2013 and 2020. His honours also include nine Bundesliga titles during a decade with the club.
The Berlin-born defender progressed through Hertha Berlin’s academy, where he came up alongside his older half-brother Kevin-Prince. After early stints at Hamburg and Manchester City, Boateng’s career peaked following his move to Bayern.
Following his departure from Munich in 2021, he went on to play for Lyon in France, Salernitana in Italy, and most recently Austrian side LASK, where his contract was terminated in August.
In his later years, Boateng faced legal proceedings linked to domestic violence allegations involving his ex-wife. The case concluded with a warning and a suspended fine.
