Building Collapse

There was relief in Lagos on Friday night after all eight male construction workers trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building were successfully rescued.

The incident occurred around 7:46 p.m. when a four-storey structure under construction at Alagomeji, Ebute-Metta, suddenly gave way, sparking panic in the area.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, through its Deputy Comptroller Olajide Ogabi, confirmed that three workers were rescued shortly after the collapse, with emergency teams working tirelessly through the night to save the remaining trapped victims.

“The building collapse at 333 Borno Way, Alagomeji, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, has all relevant emergency responders including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service at the scene with three male adult victims already rescued alive while search and rescue continues for the remaining two construction workers still trapped in,” he stated.

While giving an update on the development, he noted that the search-and-rescue operations had reached ground zero, with no further casualties reported.

“All reported trapped eight victims (all adults male construction workers) have been rescued alive as search and rescue reached ground zero while evacuation of rubbles continue,” he added.

Platinumpost reports that the three-storey building under construction collapsed on Friday night, September 12, 2025.

In a post on its X handle on Saturday, the National Emergency Management Agency stated that the incident occurred at about 8:30 pm, leaving several people trapped under the rubble.

The incident has renewed worries about the recurring cases of building collapses in the state. Also, Ebute-Metta where the incident occurred has witnessed multiple similar tragedies, resulting in injuries and loss of lives.

Meanwhile, preliminary findings from emergency officials often suggested that structural weakness and possible use of substandard materials may have contributed to the incidents.

This is as the Lagos State Government has repeatedly emphasised its commitment to stricter monitoring of construction projects.
