6 Israelis killed in Jerusalem shooting as Hamas hails attackers

Six people were killed on Monday when Palestinian gunmen opened fire at a crowded bus stop on the northern edge of Jerusalem, according to Israel’s foreign minister Gideon Saar.

His remarks revised earlier reports from Israel’s ambulance service, which initially put the death toll at five.

Speaking alongside Hungarian foreign minister Peter Szijjarto in Budapest, Saar called the incident a “terrible terror attack,” and declared: “We are in a war with radical Islamist terrorism. Europe and the international community, every country, must now make a clear choice. Are they on Israel’s side, or are they on the side of the jihadists?”

In the aftermath, large numbers of Israeli security forces were deployed to scour the area for other assailants or explosives.

The military said it was tightening control around Palestinian villages near Ramallah in the West Bank as part of its response.

Hamas praised the two Palestinians it described as “resistance fighters” behind the shooting, while stopping short of claiming responsibility. The militant group Islamic Jihad also lauded the attack without directly taking credit.
