Gunmen attacks displace 300 destroy 30 houses in Plateau

Communities in Qua’an Pan Local Government Area of Plateau State have been thrown into crisis following a fresh wave of gunmen attacks that displaced over 300 residents and destroyed no fewer than 30 houses.

Although no fatalities were reported, the attacks left devastating consequences for farmers as barns and food stores were razed, compounding fears of hunger and economic hardship in the affected villages.

The renewed violence comes barely six days after four herders were killed and another injured in Fili village, Doemak district, within the same local government area. Local herders told Daily Trust that the victims were attacked while grazing their animals.

Confirming the latest attacks, the spokesman of the Qua’an Pan LG Council, Danaan Cletus Sylvanus, said the chairman, Christopher Manship, had visited the affected communities, adding that some of the affected communities include Nteng, Doop, Zhep Morop, Gyeergu, Kelaghan, Loon, Kwakii, and Gorom in Doemak District.

Sylvanus said the chairman had held a stakeholders meeting and called on residents to be vigilant.
In a statement made available to journalists, Sylvanus said, “the Executive Chairman of Qua’an-Pan Local Government Area, Christopher Manship, lamented over the attacks and urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, and development associations to join hands with him to work towards a permanent solution to the attacks.

“The Chairman has mobilized security agencies to the affected areas to ensure the situation is brought under control. We are working tirelessly to restore peace and normalcy to the communities.”

Sylvanus further said the chairman had held a stakeholders meeting with religious and traditional leaders on the need for people to remain peaceful with one another irrespective of their ethnoreligious background.

Our correspondent reports that security personnel have been deployed to the affected areas to restore law and order in the areas.
